Whether you’re an angler or not, the opening of fishing season marks the unofficial beginning of summer for many of us. And a beautiful summer day it was this year! The photo was taken at Embarrass Lake, just across the road from our property, where 15 boats and a loon were ‘angling’ for the same fish.

We just put the skis away last week and it already feels like summer! The Mesabi bike Trail is open and being swept this month and we expect the ice to go out on the lakes any day now. Hiking and birdwatching is shaping up nicely with the unusually dry conditions. Early season golfing (along with discounted early-season pricing) begins next week with the opening of The Legend at Giants Ridge on March 30th, and The Quarry at Giants Ridge on April 13th. And don’t forget our one-day Earthfest event on April 21 in Mountain Iron. Since the snow vaporized so fast, we are offering a 25% off Early Bird Special for any reservations through April- come on up and have some fun!

One week, three seasons!

Just 7 days ago, we joined hundreds of nordic ski racers to take on the Pepsi Challenge Ski Marathon at Giants Ridge Resort. Then came two days of “April Showers” (in March), followed by several days of sunny summer temps that obliterated the snow and forced winter operations to close 3 weeks early at Giants Ridge. Now, the bikes are out, screens are on the windows, and the garlic and onion shoots are already poking through their winter blanket of mulch. Truly an amazing week of weather, and one I hope we never experience again!

You spend 1/3 of your day sleeping, and perhaps even more while on vacation! We want our guests to feel relaxed and rejuvinated from their stay at Green Gate Guest House, so we’ve put a lot of effort towards creating a healthy, comfy sleeping environment. No bleach-infused sheets or synthetic blankets with deer-and-pine-tree patterns here! Our guests are treated to naturally-dyed organic cotton bedding collections from Coyuchi, and regionally-produced organic wool comforters.

We are also excited to offer a natural Organicpedic mattress by OMI in one of our bedrooms for guests to experience. The OMI mattress is made from soft 100%-natural rubber latex and covered with organic cotton knit quilting. Plus, you’ll have a variety of natural pillows from OMI to choose from, made using natural fill materials and organic cotton covers. As we are also an OMI ‘lodging partner’, guests choosing to purchase an OMI mattress can do so through us and apply their lodging rate towards the mattress purchase (and simply have it shipped to their home address). Things to do on the Iron Range- Giants Ridge Slush Cup

The annual alpine Slush Cup is coming up March 17-18 at Giants Ridge. We’re talkin’ BBQ, dancing, the famous Slush Cup, themed costume competition, and awesome alpine skiing conditions in seasonally mild weather. Perfect.
